When job volume grows, the instinctive response is often to hire more technicians. But adding headcount is expensive, slow (recruiting and training take time), and it doesn't fix the underlying problem if your existing technicians aren't being used efficiently in the first place.
Technician utilisation, the percentage of a technician's paid time actually spent on billable, productive work, is one of the most powerful levers available to a field service business, precisely because improving it doesn't require adding a single new person. Here's how to lift utilisation using the team you already have.
Utilisation compares billable, productive hours against total paid hours. A technician working an eight-hour day who spends six hours on actual service work and two hours travelling, waiting, or handling admin has a utilisation rate of 75 percent.
Low utilisation doesn't necessarily mean technicians are working slowly or inefficiently on the job itself. More often, it's a sign of friction elsewhere in the process: poor scheduling, excessive travel time, admin overload, or delays waiting on parts or information. That distinction matters, because it changes where you look for improvement.
Adding technicians increases capacity, but it doesn't address whatever is capping utilisation for your existing team.
